Charitable Giving Robust at $427.71 Billion, Results Mixed Up .7% in Current Dollars, Down 1.7% Adjusted for Inflation

Americans continued to support charities with gifts from individuals, their bequests, foundations, and corporations totaling $427.71 billion given to US charities according to Giving USA 2019, The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2018.

2019 Giving USA Data

Total charitable giving rose 0.07% in current dollars over last year’s record-breaking revised total of $424.74, but adjusted for inflation, total giving declined 1.7%. The news was mixed, with gifts from individuals down 2% accounting for 68% of the giving total, their bequests were essentially unchanged at 9%, but giving was up from foundations (especially from family foundations) and from corporations. While overall it wasn’t a banner year for philanthropy, it was also not the catastrophic decline that some had predicted.

The important takeaway for most of us is that giving by individuals, their bequests, and their family foundations amounted to an overwhelming 85.7% of last year’s total giving.
